24 Hours in San Diego

This month I was able to pick up a trip with a long layover in the sunny city of San Diego. Now, this would be an exciting thing in itself, but it also happens that my long-distance boyfriend resides in the San Diego area. So, a double whammy.

I flew in from Newark to San Diego, so naturally, the flight was delayed. We were supposed to get in around 10:30 pm but didn’t arrive until 11:30 pm. It was Cinco de Mayo so I’m sure we could’ve found something to do in Gaslamp Quarter, where our hotel is located, but instead my boyfriend met me at the hotel and we watched TV and went to bed.

After sleeping in, we made our way to Little Italy for brunch. San Diego has always been one of my favorite layover spots, but every time I go Little Italy gets better. There are so many great restaurants, bars, and little shops to choose from. I strongly recommend spending some time here on your next trip.

We picked Farmer’s Table for brunch which is located right in the heart of Little Italy. Being in the incredible weather of San Diego, sitting outside is a must. Luckily, they have a ton of outdoor seating and we didn’t have to wait at all for a table. I had the Bagel Lox which was phenomenal. The massive bloody mary’s with half a meal attached are fun to try. We’ll definitely be heading back.

After brunch, we decided to walk around and enjoy downtown. I, of course, was in desperate need of coffee number two for the day. James Coffee Co. is located in this cute little open-air building that houses a couple of shops. Great coffee spot and it’s fun (and sustainable) that they put their coffees in little glass jars with coozies.

We wandered around the shops, Stroll, one that I like to frequent when I’m downtown is a great spot for trendy clothing and gifts. Art of Play is a crazy fun game shop that kept my boyfriend entertained long enough for me to hit all the other shops without being bothered. It’s such a cool game shop for all ages. Great for gifts or a little San Diego souvenir.

Since I had to work the redeye back to Chicago we didn’t go to a nice dinner but if you’re looking for a spot here are some of my recommendations:

Nolita Hall: We’ve been here a few times for date night. It’s a perfect spot to sit outside or at the bar. Something unique that they do that I love is behind the bar they have a changing board that lists the next flight that’s about to fly overhead and land at the airport, which is less than ten minutes away. I love coming here and sharing a few things with a fancy cocktail. We’re always pleasantly surprised with their appetizers, they’re unique and always delicious.

Kettner Exchange: Definitely a scene. Sitting on the rooftop on a weekend night is so much fun. The food is incredible, the drinks are so fun (I like the Dirty Verde), and when we were there a magician was walking around and blew our minds. If you go I suggest getting a cabana which puts you on the rooftop and makes your table feel like its own little private mini-room. One of the best meals I’ve had in San Diego, easily!

Wolfie’s Carousel Bar: I’ve only gotten drinks here, but it’s a fun spot to stop. And yes, if you can’t tell from the name, there’s quite literally a massive carousel that sits and spins in the middle of the bar. We snagged a spot and spun around while sipping cocktails. A very unique experience, and definitely recommend hitting the bar here.

Born & Raised: I haven’t been here yet, but it is next on my list! My boyfriend has been, and is dying to go back. I can’t wait to try it. It’s a steak place and also has a cute aesthetic which I always appreciate.

Twenty-four hours is never enough in San Diego but I’ll always take what I can get. Check out my TikTok and Instagram for more San Diego trips!
